How to Join Pistol Section
The SSAA Brisbane Range has 3 pistol ranges in addition to the Rifle & Shotgun ranges.
- 200m Pistol Metallic Silhouette Range
- 50m Pistol Range with static and turning targets
- Indoor Air Pistol Range
Each month the club runs around 50 pistol competitions, and is open for practice 6 days a week.
Competitions available include,
- Metallic Silhouette (12m Air Pistol, 100m Rimfire, 100m & 200m Centerfire)
- SSAA Practical Shooting / Action Match (IPSC style match, Steel Challenge, Falling Plate Match)
- Australian Police & Service Match
- Single Action / Western Action Match
- Target Pistol
- Black Powder Pistol
Joining the SSAA(Brisbane) Pistol Section
Please Note: For the safety of all members on the range, it is a requirement that to join the SSAA(Brisbane) Pistol Section you must be able to understand and comply with all range commands and instructions provided in English without translation.
Approximate timeline for new pistol license application:

Do you hold a current firearms license?
IF NO go to Step 1

1. Statement of Eligibility
If you do not have a current firearms license you must obtain QPS Form QP 515 Statement of Eligibility

Submit the completed form at your local Police Station. (No fee) You will need to have the following information to complete the form:
- Photographic ID e.g. Drivers Licence;
- Proof of address e.g. Rates/Electricity account.
The ‘Statement of Eligibility' will be sent to you in the mail but takes as long to process as a firearms license.
Please do not book into induction until you have received the 'Statement of Eligibility' in the mail.
Upon receipt of the Statement, immediately contact the club to book into the next available Induction. Please note the Statement is valid for only 3 months.
The original document must be submitted with your application to join the Pistol Section and the club is required to keep it.
2. Join the Pistol Section
To officially join the Pistol Section of SSAA Brisbane, you must attend induction and you will be required to produce or complete an application for the following:
- SSAA Membership Click here to join SSAA(QLD) if you are not already a member.
- Current Drivers Licence / 18+ Card
- Current Firearms Licence.
- 2 Character References Click here to download the character reference template.
Two signed character references are required from persons who have known you for at least 2 years. They must be over 18 years, and on the electoral roll. They must not be related or living at the same address. They also cannot be staff or Committee at SSAA Brisbane.
Please use the template provided to ensure all the information required is provided.
If you are already Category H licensed in QueenslandIn addition to the above requirements, transferees from other approved pistol clubs within Queensland are required to attend the induction course, and also submit a letter of recommendation from their existing pistol club. The letter must include the following

If you are already Category H licensed and transferring from interstateIn addition to the above requirements, transferees from other approved pistol clubs interstate are required to attend the induction course, and also submit a letter of recommendation from their existing pistol club. The letter must include the following,
Application for a Qld Category H Licence must be processed within 7 days of moving to QLD. To assist with this further please contact the office. NOTE: Induction courses in May: 13 months fees will be charged to avoid having to process a renewal in less than 1 month.
Upon completion of the above steps your 6 month probation period begins.
Once you have completed the induction you then start to attend the Trainee Shoots. The Trainee Shoots are suitable for unlicensed and licensed pistol section members needing to complete the 'Notice of Competency' to be signed off as competent & enable them to apply for their Cat H licence and/or purchase the handgun of their choice.
SSAA Brisbane has created the Safety & Competency Training Program to ensure that all new members are given the same training in the safe handling of firearms. The program is mandatory for all new members of the pistol section. Licensed members transferring from other clubs are assessed for competency based on the same requirements before being able to attend any club shoots. The first Trainee Shoot will be booked for you at Induction and the cost is included in the session fees.

3. Firearm Safety Courses
Under the Qld Weapons Act, you are required to be a member of a pistol section/club for a MINIMUM of six months before you are eligible to apply for your concealable license. The firearms safety course for Cat H MUST BE COMPLETED before you can apply for your concealable license.
SSAA(Brisbane) recommends Queensland Firearms Training who run courses on our range on most Saturdays. This course may be completed during the 6 month probation period.
4. Participation
Under the Qld Weapons Act, participation requirements are required to be met and it is the sole responsibility of the individual members to understand and ensure compliance.
Participation record cards are provided when you join and must be completed each time you attend the range for handgun shooting.
At the end of each financial year, you are required to provide copies of your participation record cards to all pistol clubs that you are a member of.

5. Firearms License Application
Once you have been and member for at least 6 months, have participated in at least 3 competition shoots in the previous 6 months, completed the Cat H safety course you will then need to get a QP518a from the pistol section (verifying all these details) then you can apply for the licence. To obtain this letter from the club, complete the Request for documentation form and return it by email with the required attached documents as described on the form to bookings@ssaabris.org.au.
